How do we understand the operation of "racism" in the post-civil rights era of formal equality under law? Why is it a mistake for racial justice advocates to pitch their arguments with reference to disparities alone? Is mass incarceration truly "the new Jim Crow"? What language, strategies, and policies will allow us to generate and sustain an inclusive dialogue and practice on race, social justice and the true meaning of democracy?
