ABOUT US
The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity was established at The Ohio State University in May of 2003. The central goals of the Institute are to make meaningful contributions to the field of research and scholarship on race, ethnicity and social justice; to help reframe the way the public thinks about, talks about, and acts on race and ethnicity; and to assist in establishing a society that is fair and just for all people. The Institute also attends to the interrelatedness of race and ethnicity with other markers such as gender, class, and culture and how these are embedded in structures and systems. Collaboration with other institutions and organizations around the world and ongoing relationships with real people, real communities, and real issues are a vital part of its work.
As it works deliberately and strategically to deepen the understanding of the conditions that create isolation and social injustice for so many people of color, the Institute's work also documents how those conditions ultimately harm us all. The Institute disseminates the knowledge gained through research and scholarship widely, so that policy makers, educators, business and community leaders, and other citizens will have the information and awareness needed to bring about transformative change.
